Wikipedia’s Desktop Site is Getting its First Redesign in a Decade

Wikipedia, which is widely known and regarded as one of the most visited sites in the world is getting a redesign for the first time in over a decade.

The organization finally decided to make some changes in the design of some elements on the site.

Wikimedia, the parent company of Wikipedia said that the decision to keep the site stuck with the same design all this while was to prevent features from overwhelming users.

The company wants to make the interface more sophisticated than it currently is while still “keeping its core identity”.

A reconfigurable logo, a collapsible sidebar, and improved search options are the new features that the upgraded site will contain.

In addition to these, language switching links and a restructured table of contents for each article will be available.

To begin with, Wikimedia is introducing the collapsible sidebar first; this usually hosts links to various random articles, language changers, and basic translators.

The next feature in focus is the maximum line width to aid undivided reading. It is widely known that a wide format is essential when reading an article that is quite long.

The company has begun to test these features with early adopter Wikis like Fasi Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, and French Wikipedia.

This project is, however, not a direct and straightforward one as Wikipedia expects that it will be completed and finally rolled out to different Wikis by the end of 2021.

The reason for the slow introduction is to get people acquainted with these new features gradually.
