KaiOS, the mobile operating system used to power feature phones like last year’s Nokia 8110 banana phone and JioPhone, finally has official version of WhatsApp which KaiOS devices worldwide will have access to.
In its official blog, KaiOS states that, the app may be downloaded from the KaiStore for KaiOS devices with 256MB or 512MB of RAM, and it will be preinstalled on most feature phones powered by KaiOS by third quarter of this year. The KaiOS version of the app supports calls and messaging, and it includes end-to-end encryption just like on Android and iOS.
The app is now available for a total of seven KaiOS devices; the Cat B35, Doro 7060, JioPhone, JioPhone 2, Nokia 8110, Orange Sanza and the MTN Smart (which is available in Nigeria and some parts of Africa). Here’s a complete list of devices available worldwide that come with KaiOS.
Fun Fact: KaiOS is a light-weight operating system that runs on feature phones. The operating system began its existence as a fork of Firefox OS after Firefox dumped the idea of the operating system. As at May 2019, over a hundred million phones with KaiOS were shipped worldwide, and that has made KaiOS the third most used operating system worldwide behind Android and iOS.
